George II was born on 10 November 1683 in Hanover and became King of Great Britain and Ireland in 1727. He was the last British monarch born outside Britain and the last to personally lead British troops into battle. In 1743, he commanded British forces at the Battle of Dettingen, becoming the last reigning British monarch to fight in person. His reign also saw the Jacobite Rising of 1745, which ended with the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army at Culloden in 1746. George supported the development of Britain’s growing empire and parliamentary government. He died on 25 October 1760 at Kensington Palace and was succeeded by his grandson George III.
