Henry IV was born in 1367 at Bolingbroke Castle and became King of England in 1399 after overthrowing his cousin Richard II. He was the first English king from the House of Lancaster. His reign was troubled by rebellions, including the Glyndŵr Rising in Wales, led by Owain Glyndŵr, and northern rebellions by powerful nobles. Henry’s eldest son, the future Henry V, played an important role in suppressing these uprisings. Henry also suffered from serious illness during his later years. He died on 20 March 1413 at Westminster and was buried at Canterbury Cathedral. His reign established the Lancastrian dynasty but left England facing continued political and military challenges.
