Richard III was born on 2 October 1452 at Fotheringhay Castle and became King of England in 1483 following the removal of his nephew Edward V. His accession remains controversial because Edward and his younger brother Richard, the Princes in the Tower, disappeared after being imprisoned. Richard faced rebellion from supporters of the previous dynasty, including the Duke of Buckingham’s rebellion in 1483. His reign ended when Henry Tudor invaded England and defeated Richard at the Battle of Bosworth Field on 22 August 1485. Richard fought personally and was killed during the battle, becoming the last English king to die in battle. His death ended the Plantagenet dynasty and marked the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. His remains were rediscovered in Leicester in 2012 and reburied at Leicester Cathedral in 2015.
