Louise of Stolberg was born on 20 September 1752 in Mons, in the Austrian Netherlands, and became connected with the Stuart claim to the British throne through her marriage to Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie. They married in 1772, although their relationship later became unhappy and they separated in 1780. Louise lived in Florence and later Rome, where she became involved with the exiled Stuart family. Following Charles Edward’s death in 1788, she continued to use the title Countess of Albany. She later formed a long-term relationship with the Italian poet Vittorio Alfieri. Louise died on 29 January 1824 in Florence, aged 71.
