Thomas Wolsey (c.1473–1530) was one of the most powerful figures in Tudor England and served as chief minister to King Henry VIII. Born the son of a butcher in Ipswich, Wolsey rose through the Church to become Archbishop of York, a cardinal and eventually Lord Chancellor of England. He became a trusted adviser to Henry VIII and controlled much of the country’s government, diplomacy and royal administration. Wolsey played a major role in European affairs, negotiating with powerful rulers including the kings of France and Spain. However, his influence made him many enemies, and his failure to secure Henry’s annulment from Catherine of Aragon led to his dramatic fall from power in 1529. Stripped of his offices and summoned to London, Wolsey died at Leicester Abbey in 1530 before he could face further punishment. His extraordinary rise and fall remains one of the most famous stories of power and ambition in Tudor history.
