William III was born on 14 November 1650 in The Hague and became King of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1689 alongside his wife, Mary II. He came to Britain during the **Glorious Revolution of 1688**, replacing Mary’s father, James II. William was a committed Protestant and spent much of his reign fighting the expansion of Catholic France under Louis XIV. The **Battle of the Boyne in 1690** secured William’s control of Ireland and became a major event in British and Irish history. After Mary died in 1694, William continued to rule alone until his death on **8 March 1702** following complications from a fall from his horse. He was succeeded by Mary’s sister, Queen Anne.
