Eleanor of Aquitaine was born around 1122 and became one of the most powerful women in medieval Europe. She inherited the Duchy of Aquitaine in 1137 and married Louis VII of France that same year, becoming Queen of France. Their marriage was annulled in 1152, after which Eleanor married Henry Plantagenet, the future Henry II of England. She became Queen of England in 1154 and was the mother of several important royal children, including Richard the Lionheart and King John. Eleanor supported her sons during their rebellion against Henry II in 1173–1174, resulting in her imprisonment for many years. After Henry’s death in 1189, she became an important political figure during Richard’s reign. Eleanor died on 1 April 1204 at Fontevraud Abbey, aged around 82.
