Charles I was born on 19 November 1600 and succeeded his father, James I, as King in 1625. He married Henrietta Maria of France and they had nine children, including the future Charles II and James II. Charles’s belief in royal authority brought him into repeated conflict with Parliament, eventually resulting in the English Civil War from 1642. After military defeat, he was put on trial for high treason against his own people. Charles was executed on 30 January 1649 outside the Banqueting House at Whitehall. His death shocked Europe and led to the establishment of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. The monarchy was restored in 1660 when his son Charles II returned to the throne.
