Edward IV was born on 28 April 1442 at Rouen and became leader of the Yorkist cause during the Wars of the Roses. He became King of England in 1461 after defeating the Lancastrian forces at the Battle of Towton, one of the bloodiest battles fought on English soil. Edward was briefly deposed in 1470, forcing him into exile, but returned and regained the throne in 1471. His forces defeated the Lancastrians at Barnet and Tewkesbury, ending major Lancastrian resistance. Edward’s reign brought relative stability and economic growth after years of civil war. He died unexpectedly on 9 April 1483 at Westminster, aged 40. His young son Edward V succeeded him, although he would reign for only a few months.
