Edward V was born on 2 November 1470 at Westminster Abbey and became King of England on 9 April 1483, aged just 12, following the death of his father Edward IV. Before he could be crowned, he was taken into the custody of his uncle, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who became Lord Protector. Edward and his younger brother Richard were imprisoned in the Tower of London and became known as the Princes in the Tower. In June 1483, Parliament declared Edward’s parents’ marriage invalid, making him illegitimate and removing him from the succession. His uncle became King Richard III. Edward’s ultimate fate remains unknown, although he and his brother are widely believed to have died in the Tower. He was never crowned and is traditionally considered one of England’s shortest-reigning monarchs.
