Edward VII was born on 9 November 1841 and was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He became King of the United Kingdom in 1901 after his mother’s death, following a remarkably long period as heir apparent. Edward married Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, and their marriage produced six children. His reign was known for diplomacy, social activity and improved relations with European powers, earning him the nickname “Edward the Peacemaker”. He helped strengthen the Entente Cordiale with France in 1904. Edward died on 6 May 1910 at Buckingham Palace, aged 68, and was succeeded by his son George V.
