George IV was born on 12 August 1762 and became Prince Regent in 1811 due to his father’s illness, before becoming King in 1820. He was known for his extravagant lifestyle, love of architecture and patronage of the arts. As Prince Regent, he helped create the magnificent Regency style associated with early 19th-century Britain. His coronation in 1821 was famously lavish. George had a troubled marriage to Caroline of Brunswick and attempted unsuccessfully to divorce her. His reign coincided with the end of the Napoleonic Wars and significant social change. He died on 26 June 1830 at Windsor Castle and was succeeded by his brother William IV.
