Henry II was born on 25 March 1133 at Le Mans and became King of England in 1154, ending the civil war of the previous reign. He inherited a vast collection of territories in England and France and became one of Europe’s most powerful monarchs. Henry introduced major legal and administrative reforms that helped shape the English common law system. His reign was famously troubled by his conflict with his former friend Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was murdered in 1170 by four knights associated with Henry. Henry also faced repeated rebellions by his own sons. He died on 6 July 1189 at Chinon in France and was buried at Fontevraud Abbey. His son Richard succeeded him.
