Henry VI was born on 6 December 1421 at Windsor Castle and became King of England in 1422, aged only nine months, following the death of his father Henry V. He was also recognised as King of France, although French resistance eventually defeated English ambitions. Henry was deeply religious but suffered from periods of severe mental illness, contributing to political instability. His reign was dominated by the Wars of the Roses, beginning in the 1450s between the houses of Lancaster and York. Henry was captured by the Yorkists in 1465 and later restored before being captured again. He was murdered in the Tower of London on 21 May 1471, shortly after the Lancastrian defeat at the Battle of Tewkesbury. He was later venerated as a saint, although never formally canonised.
