Henry VIII was born on 28 June 1491 at Greenwich Palace and became King of England in 1509 following the death of his father, Henry VII. He is famous for his six marriages and for transforming England’s relationship with the Catholic Church. His desire to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon contributed to the English Reformation, and in 1534 the Act of Supremacy recognised Henry as Supreme Head of the Church of England. His reign also saw the dissolution of the monasteries from 1536 and the expansion of royal naval power. Henry married six times, with only three of his wives surviving him. He died on 28 January 1547 at Whitehall Palace, aged 55, and was buried at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
