Charles I was born on 19 November 1600 at Dunfermline Palace and became King of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1625 following the death of his father, James I. He believed strongly in the divine right of kings and repeatedly clashed with Parliament over taxation, religion and royal authority. These tensions eventually led to the **English Civil War in 1642**, with Charles leading the Royalist forces against Parliament. He was defeated and captured, and after a trial he was executed outside the Banqueting House in London on **30 January 1649**. Charles became the only English monarch to be formally tried and executed. The monarchy was abolished and England became a republic under Oliver Cromwell.
