Richard I, known as “the Lionheart”, was born on 8 September 1157 at Beaumont Palace in Oxford. He became King of England on 6 July 1189, although he spent very little of his reign in England. Richard was one of the principal leaders of the Third Crusade, campaigning in the Holy Land from 1191 to 1192. His victories, including the Battle of Arsuf in 1191, demonstrated his exceptional military ability. Richard negotiated with Saladin before leaving the Holy Land without retaking Jerusalem. He was captured and imprisoned in Europe on his journey home and released after a large ransom was paid. In 1199, he was fatally wounded by a crossbowman during the siege of Châlus Castle and died on 6 April 1199.
