Richard I, known as “the Lionheart”, was born on 8 September 1157 at Oxford and became King of England in 1189. A renowned military commander, Richard spent much of his reign abroad, particularly during the Third Crusade (1189–1192). He fought the Muslim leader Saladin and captured the important city of Acre in 1191. Although Richard failed to recapture Jerusalem, he negotiated a truce allowing Christian pilgrims access to the city. On his return to Europe, he was captured and held for ransom before returning to England in 1194. Richard was mortally wounded by a crossbow bolt while besieging Châlus Castle in France on 26 March 1199. He died on 6 April 1199, aged 41, and was succeeded by his brother John.
