King Stephen was born around 1092 and was a grandson of William the Conqueror. He seized the English throne in 1135 following the death of his uncle Henry I, despite Henry having designated his daughter Matilda as heir. His reign was dominated by the civil war known as the Anarchy, fought between supporters of Stephen and Matilda. Stephen was captured at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141, but was later released and continued fighting. The conflict eventually ended with the Treaty of Wallingford in 1153, under which Matilda’s son Henry was recognised as Stephen’s successor. Stephen died on 25 October 1154 and was buried at Faversham Abbey. He was succeeded by Henry II, beginning the Plantagenet dynasty.
