William III was born on 14 November 1650 in The Hague and became King of England and Ireland jointly with his wife Mary II in **1689**, following the overthrow of her father, James II. William was a Dutch prince and a leading Protestant opponent of French expansion under Louis XIV. His accession followed the **Glorious Revolution of 1688**, which established important limits on royal power through the Bill of Rights of 1689. William continued the struggle against France during the Nine Years’ War and defeated Jacobite forces at the **Battle of the Boyne in 1690**. He and Mary ruled jointly until her death in 1694, after which William ruled alone. He died on **8 March 1702**.
