Lady Jane Grey was born around 1537 and was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII. A committed Protestant, she was named as Edward VI’s successor in his final days, despite Mary Tudor having the stronger hereditary claim. Jane became queen on 10 July 1553, but her reign lasted only nine days. Mary gathered support and entered London, causing Jane’s government to collapse. Jane was imprisoned in the Tower of London and initially spared, but a later rebellion led to her execution. She was beheaded on 12 February 1554, aged around 16 or 17. Often called “the Nine Days’ Queen,” Jane became a symbol of the religious and political conflicts of Tudor England.
