Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, was born on 7 December 1545 and was a member of the Scottish royal family with a claim to both the English and Scottish thrones. He married Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1565, becoming King Consort of Scotland. Their marriage deteriorated rapidly, and Darnley became involved in the murder of Mary’s secretary and close confidant David Rizzio in 1566. Darnley was murdered at Kirk o’ Field in Edinburgh on 10 February 1567, in an explosion followed by strangulation. He was only 21 years old. His death became one of the most controversial episodes of Mary, Queen of Scots’ reign and contributed to her eventual downfall.
