Mary II was born on 30 April 1662 at St James’s Palace and was the eldest daughter of James II and Anne Hyde. A Protestant, she married her Dutch cousin **William of Orange in 1677**. During the Glorious Revolution of 1688, William invaded England and James II fled, leading Parliament to offer the crown jointly to William and Mary. They became joint monarchs in **1689**, with Mary playing an important role in government when William was abroad. Their reign established the constitutional settlement created by the **Bill of Rights 1689**. Mary died of smallpox on **28 December 1694**, aged only 32, leaving William to rule alone until 1702.
