Queen Silvia of Sweden was born on 23 December 1943 in Heidelberg, Germany, and became Queen Consort of Sweden after marrying King Carl XVI Gustaf in 1976. She met the future king while working as a hostess during the 1972 Munich Olympics. Their wedding took place on 19 June 1976 in Stockholm Cathedral. Silvia has focused much of her royal work on children’s welfare, dementia awareness and humanitarian causes. She founded the World Childhood Foundation in 1999, supporting vulnerable children internationally. She and Carl XVI Gustaf have three children, including Crown Princess Victoria. Silvia remains Queen of Sweden and one of Europe’s longest-serving modern royal consorts.
