Thomas Cromwell was born around 1485 and rose from relatively humble origins to become one of the most powerful ministers of Henry VIII. He entered royal service in the 1520s and became a key architect of the English Reformation and the dissolution of the monasteries beginning in 1536. Cromwell helped establish the legal and administrative foundations for Henry’s break with Rome and became Lord Privy Seal in 1536. His influence eventually made him a rival of powerful factions at court. His role in arranging Henry’s unsuccessful marriage to Anne of Cleves contributed to his downfall. Cromwell was arrested for treason in 1540 and executed by beheading on 28 July 1540 at Tower Hill. He was later recognised as one of the most important architects of Tudor government.
