Edward the Elder was born around 874, the eldest son of Alfred the Great, and became King of Wessex in 899. He continued his father’s campaign against Viking-controlled territories and worked closely with his sister Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians. Together they captured and fortified important settlements, including Tamworth and Stafford, expanding Anglo-Saxon territory. Following Æthelflæd’s death in 918, Edward took control of Mercia and brought it under West Saxon authority. By 920, several rulers in Britain had recognised Edward as their overlord, greatly increasing his influence. His reign was a major step towards the political unification of England. Edward died at Farndon, Cheshire, on 17 July 924, aged around 50, and was buried at Winchester. He was succeeded by his son, Athelstan.
