Anne of Cleves was born on 22 September 1515 in Düsseldorf and was the daughter of the Duke of Cleves. Henry VIII selected her as a potential fourth wife partly to strengthen England’s alliance with Protestant German states. They married at Greenwich Palace on 6 January 1540, but Henry quickly became dissatisfied with the marriage. It was annulled only six months later, on 9 July 1540, on the grounds that it had not been consummated. Anne accepted the annulment and was rewarded generously, receiving several estates and the title “The King’s Beloved Sister.” Unlike several of Henry’s other wives, she remained on friendly terms with the king and lived comfortably in England. Anne died on 16 July 1557 at Chelsea Manor and was buried at Westminster Abbey.
