Henry Benedict Stuart was born on 11 March 1725 in Rome, the younger brother of Bonnie Prince Charlie and grandson of James II of England. A member of the exiled Stuart dynasty, he became a cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church in 1747 and was known as the Cardinal Duke of York. Although he never claimed the British throne, he was recognised by Jacobites as Henry IX of England following his brother’s death in 1788. Henry served as Dean of the College of Cardinals and became Bishop of Frascati. He lived in Rome for most of his life and died on 13 July 1807, aged 82. He was buried in St Peter’s Basilica, with his heart later placed alongside his brother’s memorial.
