James I was born on 19 June 1566 at Edinburgh Castle and became King of Scotland as James VI in 1567, aged just 13 months, following the abdication of his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots. In 1603, following the death of Elizabeth I, he also became King of England and Ireland, uniting the crowns of England and Scotland under one monarch. His reign saw the **Gunpowder Plot of 1605**, when Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators attempted to blow up Parliament. James was also a patron of the arts and authorised the famous **King James Bible**, published in 1611. He died on 27 March 1625 at Theobalds House and was succeeded by his son, Charles I.
