James II was born on 14 October 1633 at St James’s Palace and became King of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1685 following the death of his brother Charles II. A convert to Catholicism, James attempted to promote greater religious tolerance for Catholics but faced strong opposition from Parliament and the Protestant establishment. The birth of his son, James Francis Edward Stuart, in **1688** created fears of a permanent Catholic dynasty. James was overthrown during the **Glorious Revolution of 1688**, when William of Orange and his wife Mary were invited to take the throne. James fled to France and spent the remainder of his life in exile. He died on **16 September 1701** at Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
