Edward VI was born on 12 October 1537 at Hampton Court Palace, the only legitimate son of Henry VIII to survive infancy. He became King of England on 28 January 1547, aged just nine, following his father’s death. Because of his age, the country was initially governed by his uncle Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset. Edward was strongly influenced by Protestant reformers, and during his reign the Church of England became increasingly Protestant. The Book of Common Prayer was introduced in 1549, followed by further religious reforms. Edward became seriously ill in 1552–1553 and died on 6 July 1553 at Greenwich Palace, aged only 15. His attempt to exclude his Catholic half-sister Mary from the succession led to the short reign of Lady Jane Grey.
