George VI was initiated into Freemasonry in 1919 and became closely associated with the organisation during his royal career. He served as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland from 1937 to 1939, following his accession to the throne. As King, he became a prominent figure in British public life during the Second World War, famously remaining in London during the Blitz alongside Queen Elizabeth. His reign also witnessed the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947 and the beginning of the modern Commonwealth. George died on 6 February 1952 at Sandringham House after years of declining health. He was succeeded by his daughter, Elizabeth II.
