Henry III was born on 1 October 1207 at Winchester and became King of England in 1216, aged just nine, following the death of his father, King John. His early reign was guided by powerful regents who defeated the rebel barons and French forces. Henry was deeply religious and rebuilt Westminster Abbey, which was consecrated in 1269. His later reign was dominated by disputes with the barons over royal government and taxation. These tensions led to the Second Barons’ War (1264–1267), during which Henry was captured at the Battle of Lewes in 1264. His son Edward eventually defeated the rebels. Henry died on 16 November 1272 at Westminster and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
