Ludwig III was born on 7 January 1845 in Munich and became the last King of Bavaria. He became King in 1913 following the deposition of his cousin Otto I, who was deemed incapable of ruling. Ludwig’s reign coincided with the First World War, during which Bavaria remained part of the German Empire. The German Revolution of 1918 brought an end to the Bavarian monarchy, and Ludwig fled Munich following the proclamation of a republic. He formally released his officials from their oaths in November 1918, effectively ending his reign. Ludwig died on 18 October 1921 in Hungary and was later buried in the crypt of the Frauenkirche in Munich.
