Catherine of Braganza was born on 25 November 1638 in Portugal and was the daughter of King John IV of Portugal. She married Charles II of England on 21 May 1662, becoming Queen Consort. Catherine was a Catholic in a predominantly Protestant country and faced considerable political and religious opposition. Despite several pregnancies, she had no surviving children, meaning the succession eventually passed to Charles’s brother James. Catherine was known for introducing tea-drinking traditions to the English court and is often associated with the popularity of tea in Britain. After Charles’s death in 1685, she returned to Portugal. She died on 31 December 1705 in Lisbon.
