Tiberius (42 BC–AD 37) was the second Roman Emperor, ruling from AD 14 until his death in AD 37. Born into the powerful Julio-Claudian family, Tiberius became the successor of Augustus and inherited an empire that was already firmly established. An experienced military commander, he had previously achieved important victories in Europe and was regarded as an effective administrator. His later reign became increasingly associated with political suspicion and repression, particularly during the influence of the Praetorian Prefect Sejanus. Tiberius was married to Vipsania Agrippina and later Julia, daughter of Augustus. He died at Misenum in AD 37 and was succeeded by Caligula.
